Promicol is always looking for products that can be tested using the Promicol microbial ATP detection system. This time the Promicol system has been challenged to detect microbial ATP in UHT Yoghurt or Protein Dessert Products. Samples of a UHT strawberry flavoured yoghurt dessert as well as a UHT protein-rich chocolate pudding were tested in original packages or pots, inoculated with specific microorganism, and incubated for e.g. 3 days at 30 ºC.

Incubated positive and negative samples were measured using a specific Promicol Microbial ATP Detection Test Kit. Depending on the specifications of the product – UHT yoghurt dessert or protein-rich pudding – the assay and kit content will slightly differ to serve highest quality expectations. 

The results obtained showed low and reproducible RLU values for negative samples and high RLU values for samples contaminated with low levels of the specific microorganism. Depending on the product and specifications it might be necessary to dilute the product prior to measurement using the Promicol Microbial ATP Detection Test Kit to overcome any inhibitory effects. Apart from that, UHT Yoghurt or Protein Dessert Products can be directly incubated and measured.
